This globally recognized competition focuses on developing innovative Artificial Intelligence solutions to address real-world healthcare challenges. It brings together participants from across the globe who are interested in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Healthcare Technologies. The 2026 edition attracted over 3,000 participants, making it highly competitive.<\/p>\r\n

Representing PeraCom, Theekshana Dineth<\/a>, Abhimani Perera<\/a>, Sanketh Gunawardhana<\/a> and Fikry Nuhuman<\/a> presented their collaborative research and project work in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Biomedical Engineering. Their solution was commended for its innovation, practical relevance, and strong research foundation, earning them a place among the top finalists from a competitive global pool.<\/p>\r\n

The team conducted this work under the supervision of Senior Lecturer Dr. Damayanthi Herath<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

A team of final year undergraduate students from the Department of Computer Engineering<\/a>, University of Peradeniya, PeraCom secured the Second Runner-Up position at BioFusion Hackathon 2026, a medical-themed Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI\/ML) competition held in conjunction with the BioFusion Science Convention.<\/p>\r\n

The BioFusion Hackathon encourages students to develop innovative AI\/ML based solutions to address real-world healthcare and medical challenges. The 2026 edition of the competition attracted 65 teams, making it a highly competitive event.<\/p>\r\n

Representing PeraCom, Team MetaX presented an innovative, non-invasive approach for early liver cirrhosis detection adapting their work in the final year research project. The solution was recognized for its relevance and innovation, placing the team among the top performers of the competition.<\/p>\r\n

The team comprising Chamuditha Jananga,<\/a> Pasindu Malshan<\/a>, and Tharushika Prasadinie<\/a>, are final-year undergraduate students of the Department of Computer Engineering. The project was carried out under the supervision of Senior Lecturer Dr. Damayanthi Herath.<\/a><\/p>\r\n

The Department of Computer Engineering, University of Peradeniya, celebrates the outstanding achievements of its students at the inaugural Idea to Invention (I-TO-I) 2025 Competition (UPAA-USA Innovation Awards), jointly sponsored by the University of Peradeniya Alumni Association – USA (UPAA-USA) and the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya. The competition, conducted in 2025, aimed to promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and the transformation of ideas into impactful solutions. The certificate awarding ceremony was held on 17th January 2026, marking a significant milestone for student innovation at the university.<\/p>\r\n

Demonstrating exceptional creativity and technical excellence, two project teams from the Department of Computer Engineering emerged as finalists.<\/p>\r\n

The project P-E-BO, which won Third Place, is a desk companion robot designed to interact with users through voice, touch, and emotion awareness to provide assistance and companionship. It integrates smart interaction features with a mobile application to enhance everyday user experience. The project was carried out by Bhagya Senevirathna, Buddhika Ariyarathna, Yasiru Edirimanna, and Yohan Senadheera under the supervision of Dr. Isuru Nawinne.<\/p>\r\n

The project RehabGait, which secured First Place, focuses on enabling remote gait analysis for physiotherapy clinics using wearable sensing devices and a cloud-based web platform. The system provides quantitative gait data and supports digital patient and medical report management. The project was developed by Chamath Rupasinghe, Chamodi Senaratne, Haritha Bandara, and Yohan Senanayake under the supervision of Dr. Isuru Nawinne.<\/p>\r\n

The Department of Computer Engineering congratulates both teams on their exceptional achievements and commends them for demonstrating how engineering innovation can meaningfully address everyday human needs.<\/p>\r\n

A team of final-year undergraduates from the Department of Computer Engineering, University of Peradeniya, secured first place at Code with WIE 2025, the seventh edition of the annual innovation challenge organized by the IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Sri Lanka Section.<\/p>\r\n

Held under the theme “Empowering Innovation for a Sustainable Future,” the competition aims to inspire young innovators to develop impactful technological solutions addressing real-world challenges. The grand finale took place on 18th October 2025 at the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT) City Campus, Galle Road, Colombo.<\/p>\r\n

Out of 100 participating teams, 45 teams advanced to the qualifier round, and 12 outstanding teams were selected for the final showdown. Demonstrating exceptional creativity and social relevance, the Peradeniya team clinched 1st place for their project “OceanEyes”, an Autonomous Sea Pollution Detection System designed to monitor and analyze ocean pollutants using intelligent sensing and machine learning technologies.<\/p>\r\n

The winning team, (from left in the picture) Rashmi Gunathilake, Wethmi Ranasinghe, Dulanga Jayawardena, and Kasundie Hewawasam, all final-year undergraduate students of the Department of Computer Engineering, carried out the project under the supervision of Senior Lecturer Dr. Isuru Nawinne. Their innovation and dedication mark yet another remarkable achievement for PeraCom students.<\/p>\r\n

A team of final-year undergraduates from the Department of Computer Engineering, University of Peradeniya, has brought pride to the department by securing a Merit Award in the Tertiary Student Category (Business) at the NBQSA National ICT Awards 2025, organized by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT.<\/p>\r\n

The prestigious NBQSA Awards serve as a national platform to recognize and benchmark outstanding ICT innovations in Sri Lanka, promoting local talent in the global arena. Conducted annually since 1998 by the Sri Lankan section of BCS, the competition attracts some of the most promising ICT products and innovations from across the country.<\/p>\r\n

This year’s competition saw participation from over 60 teams, making the recognition a significant achievement. The award-winning team namely, Chethiya Bandara, Mathisha Bandara, Bimsara Janakantha, and Sarani Jayasooriya, all final-year undergraduate students of the Department of Computer Engineering, received the Merit Award for their project, “SkyT: A Drone-based Smart Crop Management System”. SkyT leverages drone technology and intelligent analytics to monitor and manage crop health, aiming to improve agricultural productivity through data-driven insights. The project was carried out under the supervision of Senior Lecturer Dr. Isuru Nawinne and Lecturer Mr. Biswajith Dissanayake, reflecting the innovative thinking and technical excellence nurtured within the Peradeniya Computer Engineering community.<\/p>\r\n

Dr Gamaarachchi’s groundbreaking work focuses on developing scalable and efficient computing solutions that make genomic sequencing more accessible across diverse fields, including agriculture, medicine, and ecology. His research advances scientific discovery and contributes to practical solutions with far-reaching global impact.<\/p>\r\n

Often described as the “Oscars of Science”, the Eureka Prizes honour excellence in scientific research, innovation, leadership, and communication. This achievement highlights the power of interdisciplinary research in tackling pressing global challenges and shaping the future of genomics.<\/p>\r\n

Dr Gamaarachchi earned his bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering with first-class honours from the University of Peradeniya in 2015 with an award for his outstanding performance in Engineering. He went on to complete his PhD in Computer Science and Engineering at UNSW Sydney in 2020, receiving the prestigious Dean’s Award for Outstanding PhD Theses. His doctoral research was internationally recognised, securing third place in the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Student Research Competition 2020, among competitors shortlisted from over 20 major ACM conferences worldwide.<\/p>\r\n

We are proud to celebrate Dr Gamaarachchi’s outstanding accomplishment and wish him continued success in his remarkable journey, with the confidence that his future contributions will inspire innovation and transform lives worldwide.<\/p>\r\n

The Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, proudly hosted EngEx 2025, its Diamond Jubilee exhibition, from 23rd to 27th September 2025. Among the most celebrated highlights of the event, unveiling of the PeraCom Smart City, a visionary project by the Department of Computer Engineering, was selected for the ceremonial opening of the exhibition.<\/p>\r\n

PeraCom Smart City illustrated the future of innovation, creativity, and technology. It uncovered how tomorrow’s urban environments can be reshaped through multidisciplinary problem-solving and sustainable engineering practices. Interactive exhibits showcasing applications of artificial intelligence, real-time computing, and eco-friendly technologies were demonstrated to visitors of the Smart City.<\/p>\r\n

The Smart City, featuring 23 exhibits, included several interactive zones designed to highlight real-world applications of technology. Visitors experienced a Smart Café and Smart Home, explored a VR Zone and Robotics Area, and engaged with systems addressing healthcare, agriculture, and nature. Solutions such as a Smart Hospital, Smart Agriculture Management System, Smart Environmental Management System, and Sea Pollution Control mechanisms demonstrated how engineering can offer practical answers to pressing challenges while improving quality of life.<\/p>\r\n

The responses from the visitors including the public, the industry, and school students have been extremely positive. Many identified the Smart City as a space where innovation, creativity, and technology came alive. The exhibition zone encouraged direct engagement with real-world solutions, inspiring the younger generation to pursue engineering with passion and purpose.<\/p>\r\n

ACES – Association of Computer Engineering Students, Hackers Club together with the academic and non-academic staff made this initiative a reality. Their tireless effort was a typical example of how student-led initiatives can create transformative experiences. The project went beyond building a model. It highlighted real solutions and inspired dialogue on sustainable innovation. It was a glimpse into the future. Students of PeraCom have proven that with imagination, teamwork, and innovation, ideas can indeed become reality.<\/p>\r\n

At EngEx 2025, the Smart City became one of the most admired exhibits, highlighting the University of Peradeniya’s strength in engineering education and innovation. Through projects like this, the Faculty of Engineering continues its mission to encourage problem solvers and visionaries who will lead Sri Lanka’s technological future.

The Department of Computer Engineering at the University of Peradeniya is proud to announce that three of its students have been recognized at the prestigious Migara Ratnatunga Trust Awards on Industrial Training for University Undergraduates, presented by the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL).<\/p>\r\n

This year, out of the best 11 students awarded, two PeraCom students, Mr. Imesh Balasuriya and Ms. Isuri Devindi, secured awards of cash prizes and certificates for their outstanding performance in the Computer Engineering category. These awards were presented at the annual IESL Induction and Graduation Ceremony 2024, held at BMICH on the 23rd of July 2024. During the industrial training, Imesh worked as a Software Engineering Intern at WSO2, and Isuri worked as a Visiting Research Assistant at the School of Computing and Information Systems at Singapore Management University. Additionally, Ms. Deanna Coralage, who interned as a Cloud Engineer at Sysco Labs, received a merit certificate for her performance.<\/p>\r\n

The winners and merit awardees, selected from final-year undergraduates across all state university engineering faculties in Sri Lanka, were chosen based on their presentations to the IESL selection board, which evaluated them on the technical scope of their industrial training work, presentation skills, and their performance in the Q&A session.<\/p>\r\n

PeraCom is extremely proud of their achievements and wishes them continued success in their future endeavors. PeraCom undergraduates triumph against Graduate Students and Research Scientists from World\u2019s Top Universities and Research Institutes on Autonomous Driving<\/h4>

We are delighted to share that a student team from the Department of Computer Engineering<\/strong> has won the Best Perception Paper Award<\/strong> at the AAAI-2025 Machine Learning for Autonomous Driving (ML4AD) Workshop (ML4AD) Workshop<\/a>, held on March 4th in Philadelphia, USA.<\/p>

This award is especially noteworthy because the winning paper was a Final-Year Undergraduate Project, carried out over just a few months at #PeraCom by Sathira Silva and Savindu Wannigama (E\/17 batch). The project was supervised by Gihan Jayatilaka (E\/14 batch, now a PhD student at University of Maryland), Prof. Roshan G. Ragel, and involved collaboration with Dr. Muhammad Haris Khan of MBZUAI, UAE.<\/p>

This was the ONLY undergraduate-led paper at the workshop<\/strong>\u2014and it went up against long-term research by PhD students and research scientists<\/strong> from some of the most elite institutions in the field. That includes:<\/p>
