Team Invictus, comprising undergraduates from the Department of Computer Engineering<\/a>, University of Peradeniya, secured first runner-up at EMINENCE 6.0, organized by the Women in Engineering (WIE) Affinity Group of the IEEE Student Branch, University of Ruhuna. The event was held on 3 October 2026 at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna, Hapugala, Galle.<\/p>\r\n

The competition challenged participants to apply their technical knowledge, creativity, and teamwork across tasks in MATLAB, networking, artificial intelligence, and innovation. Teams modelled a small power system using MATLAB, simulated a network using Cisco Packet Tracer, and developed or trained an AI model. Each technical task required teams to collaborate and submit their solutions within a specified time.<\/p>\r\n

The innovation component gave participants the opportunity to present an original idea, prototype, or completed project to a judging panel through quarter-final, semi-final, and final rounds. Overall performance across the technical tasks and innovation presentations determined the competition results.<\/p>\r\n

Team Invictus comprised R. M. D. Kavindya<\/a>, Y. M. C. J. Yagabamunu<\/a>, D. M. D. Sandaruwan<\/a>, and M. A. P. P. Thilakarathna.<\/a><\/p>\r\n

The category recognised AI research, innovation, and solutions developed by universities and higher education institutions.<\/p>\r\n

The team earned recognition for Kestrel, an AI-powered learning environment designed to transform textbooks and handwritten notes into structured study materials, interactive explanations, and animated educational content. The project aims to help learners explore concepts in engaging ways and access support tailored to their learning needs.<\/p>\r\n

Kestrel combines multiple AI agents, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), handwriting recognition, knowledge graphs, and automated video generation. Together, these technologies support the conversion of source material into different learning formats, connecting written content with explanations and visual resources.

The team comprised Rashad Shamil<\/a> and Dakshayani Ramanesh<\/a> from the Department of Computer Engineering, and Thilac Ramesh from the Department of Mechanical Engineering. All three are undergraduate students at the University of Peradeniya, representing the Faculty of Engineering. <\/p>\r\n

Team PetguardPro presented PetGuard Pro<\/a>, an end-to-end IoT-based pet monitoring system designed to provide dog owners with real-time insights into their pets’ location, vital health parameters, safety, and daily activity levels. The system integrates a wearable harness with a mobile application, enabling pet owners to monitor their dogs and stay informed about their well-being.<\/p>\r\n

The team comprised Chandur Fernando<\/a>, Bingusari Dissanayaka<\/a>, Savin Weerasooriya<\/a>, and Prashan Samarawikrama<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

A team of undergraduates from the Department of Computer Engineering<\/a>, University of Peradeniya, emerged as champions of the Agentic AI phase at IDEALIZE 2026<\/a>, an island-wide mobile application and web development competition organized by AIESEC in the University of Moratuwa. The final presentations took place on 20 September 2026 at the CIMA Auditorium. The organizers received more than 1,700 initial registrations across the event, with 11 teams reaching the Agentic AI phase finals.<\/p>\r\n

The team won with OrthoPAR<\/a>, a clinical decision-support platform designed to assist orthodontists with Peer Assessment Rating (PAR) scoring. PAR scoring is traditionally carried out by manually measuring dental models. OrthoPAR aims to streamline this process: clinicians can upload 3D intraoral scans, and a TensorFlow model identifies anatomical landmarks used to calculate weighted PAR scores. The platform also stores assessments so clinicians can review treatment progress over time.<\/p>\r\n

OrthoPAR’s AI clinical agent adds written summaries of the scoring results, flags components that may need attention, and provides information for clinician review. The team designed the system so that AI-generated measurements and summaries are checked by a qualified clinician before clinical use.<\/p>\r\n

Team \u0baf\u0bbe\u0bb4\u0bbf, comprising undergraduates from the Department of Computer Engineering<\/a>, University of Peradeniya, secured the second runner-up position at OctWave 3.0, an AI and machine learning competition organized by the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) Student Branch Chapter of the University of Moratuwa.<\/p>\r\n

The competition brought students together to apply AI and machine learning skills to practical challenges. It included workshops followed by two online Kaggle rounds. Teams advancing from the preliminary round competed for a place among the top ten finalists.<\/p>\r\n

From an initial field of 208 teams, Team \u0baf\u0bbe\u0bb4\u0bbf progressed to the top 70 and then earned a place in the top ten. At the in-person final held at the University of Moratuwa on 20 September 2026, the finalists worked with an industry dataset and presented their solutions to a judging panel. Team \u0baf\u0bbe\u0bb4\u0bbf completed the competition in third place, earning the second runner-up award.<\/p>\r\n

Undergraduates from the Department of Computer Engineering<\/a>, University of Peradeniya, earned awards across several categories at SLIIT CODEFEST 2026<\/a>, organized by the SLIIT Faculty of Computing. Their achievements showcase skills in IoT innovation, programming, networking, and entrepreneurship.<\/p>\r\n

Team ResQ secured first place in the university category of Innov IoT 2026<\/a> with ResQ<\/a>, a smart CPR training system. Sensors fitted to a training manikin measure compression depth, rate, recoil, pauses, and hand placement. Live dashboards provide feedback during practice and allow trainees to review their performance afterward. The team comprised S. Ganathipan<\/a>, V. Amirsha<\/a>, K. Kartheepan<\/a>, and S. Kavishanthan<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

Team Nexus earned second place in the same category with RouteLK<\/a>, a bus tracking and passenger assistance system. An ESP32-based tracking device combines GPS, passenger counting, and GSM connectivity with a mobile app that offers live tracking, bookings, and assistance for passengers, drivers, and bus operators. The team comprised Thimal Liyanage<\/a>, Dinithi Epitakaduwa<\/a>, Lakshika Senevirathne<\/a>, and Walter Ravindu Sudasinghe<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

In Algothon<\/a>, Team Nasakarar placed third in an eight-hour, on-site programming challenge involving the top 15 teams. The competition tested participants’ algorithmic thinking and problem-solving skills under time pressure. The team comprised S. Ganathipan<\/a>, Jarshigan K<\/a>, and S. Kavishanthan<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

Team Timesware secured second runner-up in NetCom<\/a>, where ten teams reached the final. Participants demonstrated their networking skills by connecting and configuring equipment, including routers and switches. The team comprised M. K. Hafees Ahamed<\/a>, M. F. M. Ayyash<\/a>, and M. N. Aamir<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

Team Horizon secured second runner-up in the Technopreneur Challenge<\/a> with Horizon<\/a>, an intelligent smart mirror designed to support the well-being of older adults. The team comprised Sithum Perera<\/a>, Anna Kurera<\/a>, Kasun Lakshan<\/a>, and Thenuka Ravindu<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

These achievements show what PeraCom students can accomplish when they apply their knowledge to practical challenges. Congratulations to all five teams, and best wishes as they continue developing their ideas and skills.<\/p>\r\n

Organized by the IEEE Student Branch and ComSoc of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, the competition took place on 13 September 2026 at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Sri Jayewardenepura.<\/p>\r\n

The team showcased Smart IV<\/a>, an innovative medical IoT device developed to improve the safety and reliability of intravenous (IV) infusion in hospital wards. Designed for manual gravity-fed IV systems, Smart IV monitors drip flow in real time, estimates the remaining fluid volume, and detects unusual conditions, including flow interruptions and empty IV bags.<\/p>\r\n

The system delivers alerts through local, desktop, and mobile interfaces, enabling healthcare staff to respond promptly to potential issues. By reducing the need for repeated manual checks, Smart IV aims to ease the workload of nurses in busy hospital environments while supporting better patient safety and more reliable IV infusion management.<\/p>\r\n

PeraCom undergraduates delivered an outstanding performance at Project Nova 2026 – University Category, organized by AIESEC in University of Sri Jayewardenepura, securing the Championship and Third Place in the university-level software innovation competition held on 5th September 2026 at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.<\/p>\r\n

The competition challenged university students to identify real-world problems and develop innovative software solutions in the form of web, mobile, or desktop applications. The competition progressed through several stages, including proposal submission, a mandatory workshop, UI prototype submission, and a final round featuring live presentations and panel discussions before a judging panel. From 20 teams selected for the University Category, 10 teams advanced to the final round.<\/p>\r\n

The Championship was awarded to Team GUARD for GUARD<\/a>, a smart IoT-based large-scale aquarium management system designed for commercial aquatic retailers, high-end breeders, and home users. The system integrates an ESP32-based monitoring platform with temperature, pH, turbidity, TDS, and IR sensors, along with automated actuator modules such as feeders and water pumps. The cloud-hosted platform enables efficient monitoring and management of aquarium environments. The winning team comprised Thisen Lakdinu<\/a>, Ravindu Ashan<\/a>, Shashika Sathsarani<\/a>, and  Asindu Chandrasekara<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

The Third Place was secured by Team Hermes for RouteLK<\/a>, a smart IoT-based bus tracking and passenger assistance system. RouteLK combines an ESP32-based hardware tracking node equipped with GPS, ultrasonic passenger counting, and GSM connectivity with a fully serverless AWS backend and a cross-role Flutter mobile application. The platform provides real-time bus tracking, booking, and passenger assistance features for passengers, drivers, and bus operators. The team consisted of Thimal Liyanage<\/a>, Dinithi Epitakaduwa<\/a>, Lakshika Senevirathne<\/a>, and  Walter Ravindu Sudasinghe<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

NexusHacks 2026 <\/a>brought together talented student innovators to develop and present technology-driven solutions across the Agentic AI and Embedded AI categories. Following 48 intense hours of building, debugging, redesigning, and refining their solution, Team Kestrel was recognized among the leading projects of the competition. The team was also ranked 4th among the Top 10 projects across both the Agentic AI and Embedded AI categories.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

Representing the University of Peradeniya, Team Kestrel secured Second Place in the Agentic AI category with their project, Kestrel, a personalized AI tutor and digital workspace designed to transform textbooks and handwritten notes into structured study guides and animated video lessons. The platform integrates a multi-agent LangGraph pipeline with targeted Retrieval- Augmented Generation (RAG), handwriting recognition, autonomous video generation, custom Manim animations, knowledge graphs, and an infinite spatial workspace.<\/p>\r\n

The competition featured a distinguished panel of industry professionals and leaders from globally recognized organizations, including Amazon, Intuit, Applied Intuition, Comcast, Samsung, Cognizant, and Moody’s. Recognition from such a strong judging panel further highlights the technical depth and innovative nature of the team's solution.<\/p>\r\n

The team comprised Rashad Shamil<\/a> and Dakshayani Ramanesh<\/a> from the Department of Computer Engineering, and Thilac Ramesh <\/strong>from the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Representing the University of Peradeniya, Team Alt+F4 secured the Championship by presenting \"Marga,\" an agentic B2B solution designed for supply chain companies. The platform continuously scans news sources for potential disruptions, intelligently analyzes their impact, identifies alternative routes, and recommends the most optimal logistics paths for operators and shipping companies. The First Runner-Up<\/strong> award was presented to Team Spectron for SPECTRON<\/a> for AgriAssist, a modular IoT platform that helps farmers monitor crops and growing conditions while providing timely updates and recommendations. The team consisted of Jarshigan Kamalanathan<\/a>, Thirumenan Sivakulasingam<\/a>, Tithurshan Tharmarathnam<\/a>, and Varshan Ambigaipakan<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

The competition was organized by ICBT Campus in collaboration with Cardiff Metropolitan University and the University of Sunderland, bringing together around 20 university teams from across Sri Lanka. The challenge required participants to identify a real-world industrial problem and develop a cost-effective robotic or automated solution, culminating in a live demonstration and prototype showcase before a panel of judges.<\/p>\r\n

The PeraCom team earned the championship with their project, \"ResQ: Low Cost Smart CPR Evaluation System,\" an innovative smart CPR training platform designed to enhance the quality of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) practice through real-time, objective feedback.<\/p>\r\n

ResQ is a smart CPR training system that enhances CPR practice by measuring compression depth, rate, recoil, pauses, and hand placement using embedded sensors. It delivers real-time feedback through instructor and trainee dashboards, enabling effective skill improvement. Portable and offline-capable, ResQ is designed for medical education, training centers, first responders, and community CPR awareness programs. <\/p>\r\n

The award-winning team comprised S. Ganathipan<\/a>, V. Amirsha<\/a>, K. Kartheepan<\/a>, and S. Kavishanthan<\/a>, all undergraduate students of the Department of Computer Engineering, University of Peradeniya.<\/p>\r\n

Organized by SLASSCOM, the National Ingenuity Awards recognize innovative and impactful technological solutions developed to address real-world challenges and contribute to national development. The awards ceremony was held on 16th June 2026 at ITC Ratnadipa, Colombo.<\/p>\r\n

The PeraCom team received this recognition for their project, “Smart IV”, a Medical IoT solution developed to improve the safety and reliability of manual gravity-fed intravenous (IV) infusion processes in hospital wards.<\/p>\r\n

The award-winning team comprised Pavindran Velalagan, Shagiththiah Kirupakaran, Abdul Latheef Mohamed Suthail, and Paarkavi Jeyatheeswaran, all third-year undergraduate students of the Department of Computer Engineering. <\/p>\r\n

The project was carried out under the supervision and guidance of Ms. Yasodha Vimukthi, Dr. Isuru Nawinne, and Mr. R.A.J. Chandula Adhikari.<\/p>\r\n

The 2026 edition attracted over 3,000 participants, making it highly competitive.<\/p>\r\n

Representing PeraCom, Theekshana Dineth<\/a>, Abhimani Perera<\/a>, Sanketh Gunawardhana<\/a> and Fikry Nuhuman<\/a> presented their collaborative research and project work in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Biomedical Engineering. A team of final year undergraduate students from the Department of Computer Engineering<\/a>, University of Peradeniya, PeraCom secured the Second Runner-Up position at BioFusion Hackathon 2026, a medical-themed Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI\/ML) competition held in conjunction with the BioFusion Science Convention.<\/p>\r\n

The BioFusion Hackathon encourages students to develop innovative AI\/ML based solutions to address real-world healthcare and medical challenges. The 2026 edition of the competition attracted 65 teams, making it a highly competitive event.<\/p>\r\n

Representing PeraCom, Team MetaX presented an innovative, non-invasive approach for early liver cirrhosis detection adapting their work in the final year research project. The solution was recognized for its relevance and innovation, placing the team among the top performers of the competition.<\/p>\r\n

The Department of Computer Engineering, University of Peradeniya, celebrates the outstanding achievements of its students at the inaugural Idea to Invention (I-TO-I) 2025 Competition (UPAA-USA Innovation Awards), jointly sponsored by the University of Peradeniya Alumni Association – USA (UPAA-USA) and the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya. The competition, conducted in 2025, aimed to promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and the transformation of ideas into impactful solutions. The certificate awarding ceremony was held on 17th January 2026, marking a significant milestone for student innovation at the university.<\/p>\r\n

Demonstrating exceptional creativity and technical excellence, two project teams from the Department of Computer Engineering emerged as finalists.<\/p>\r\n

The project P-E-BO, which won Third Place, is a desk companion robot designed to interact with users through voice, touch, and emotion awareness to provide assistance and companionship. It integrates smart interaction features with a mobile application to enhance everyday user experience. The project was carried out by Bhagya Senevirathna, Buddhika Ariyarathna, Yasiru Edirimanna, and Yohan Senadheera under the supervision of Dr. Isuru Nawinne.<\/p>\r\n

The project RehabGait, which secured First Place, focuses on enabling remote gait analysis for physiotherapy clinics using wearable sensing devices and a cloud-based web platform. The system provides quantitative gait data and supports digital patient and medical report management. The project was developed by Chamath Rupasinghe, Chamodi Senaratne, Haritha Bandara, and Yohan Senanayake under the supervision of Dr. Isuru Nawinne.<\/p>\r\n

The Department of Computer Engineering congratulates both teams on their exceptional achievements and commends them for demonstrating how engineering innovation can meaningfully address everyday human needs.<\/p>\r\n
